Vincent started out his career as probably the only Mandarin speaking lawyer with a Chinese background in Australia working in the field of marine and admiralty law. He has acted for fishermen fighting for licensing rights, purchased and financed vessels from Singapore and Malaysia, appealed all the way to the High Court for ship collisions, flagged, de-flagged and re-flagged vessels in Australia, Singapore, Panama, the Dominica Republic, dealt in charter party arrangements, and assisted AMSA in their investigations in a major shipping incident. Vincent has a passion for law of the ship and the sea and will continue to have an interest in this area of the law.
Vincent is renowned for his skills in resolving civil and commercial disputes, inside and outside of the courts. He has litigated in all levels of Australian courts and is particularly creative when it comes to strategising the battle as well as the war. With his advice and assistance, many of his clients have walked away from disputes with a fair and acceptable outcome – many of them without the need to end up going into the witness box. One of Vincent’s special skills is his ability to understand the ‘person’, including his clients, his opponents and the witnesses – this allows him to constantly examine the situation and any negotiations by looking through the eyes of others. This, he believes, is the best way to understand and to resolve a dispute. Some of Vincent’s notable cases include:
- Fun and ding
- Architects case
- KONG ah
- Sydney sprouts

- Due diligence and reporting; and
- Representing clients in alternative dispute resolution forums or in litigation.
Having spent a significant part of his youth in and around building sites, Vincent is well aware of the exigencies of life for developers, builders and contractors. He is particularly aware of the many ‘realities’ that these parties faces in their daily affairs such as safety, cash flow and taxes. With sharp economic upturns and downturns, Vincent has found himself increasingly acting to deal with issues arising in connection with the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payments Act, and building adjudications. He and his team has obtained many successful outcomes in ensuring their clients got paid for their work in a timely manner.
Insolvency and Turnaround
The field of corporate insolvency is a very unique and specialised area where there are only a handful of industry players. Vincent, with his sharp mind, exceptional creativity, and a special talent of knowing people and what they want, has made a mark as a leading Chinese speaking lawyer and advisor for companies looking for outside the box solutions and corporate restructuring when times are tough. Vincent has a particular talent when coming to using Deeds of Company Arrangements to resolve complex insolvency scenarios and resolving deadlocks. In more recent days, Vincent has been involved in a number of high profile insolvency and restructuring cases where the Corporations Act and the Insolvency Practice Schedule were out to the test in difficult insolvency situations (see AXF and Seafolly).
